The project consisted of a combination of full depth pavement reclamation and cold-planning with asphalt overlay roadway rehabilitation on M Street from 16th Street to 18th Street, and on Main Street from M street to N Street. Also included was the replacement and upgrade of numerous traffic signal detector loops and pedestrian crossing facilities. Design and construction included many constraints of existing infrastructure in this dense downtown core, including upgrading noncompliant curb ramps and sidewalk facilities and replacing portions of existing curb and gutter. Retrofitting compliant curb ramp facilities into the crowded pedestrian corridors without impacting existing traffic signal pole locations was a particularly challenging design component that required a unique detailed grading design for each quadrant of the affected intersections. Drainage improvements were included in the scope of work to maximize the lifecycle of the new roadway pavement and consisted of new inlets and storm drain piping. Because of the deep operations required for full depth pavement reclamation, VVH coordinated extensive utility potholing to include detailed vertical location information for all known wet and dry utilities within the right-of-way in order to avoid any construction conflicts or delays. Numerous “dig outs” locations were identified in the overlay portion of the project that  required detailed location information on the improvement plans. A fully new roadway marking program was designed and included a shared bicycle lane on Main Street.
